About Dundhwa National Park : Dudhwa National Park
Established in 1977, its speared over an area of 490 sq. km.in the luxuriant forests
of North Lakhimpur- Kheri. The Park consists mainly of the finest quality of Sal,
Marshes and grasslands. The grassland are the preferred habitat of the Barasingha
or Swamp Deer for which Park is best known . The Dudhwa National Park has the
distinction of having the largest population of these threatened species. The
Swamp Deer occur mostly in the wetlands of the park in the sathiana and the kakraha
areas sathiana is the wetter area being overflooded during the mansoon period
Tall and coarse grasses which from thick forests become difficult to penetrate.
The paks wild life includes Exclusive Tiger which exists in fair numbers, leopard,
elephant bear, spotted der , swamp deer muntjac, fox sambhar deer and ghrial.
Birdlife of Dudhwa National Park is vivid & spectacular with the great Indian
horned owl. Forest eagle owl, brown fish owl, black necked stork and hawks &eagles
Among the colourful birds are varities of wood pecker, orioles kingfishers, ulbuls,
and minivets. Migratory birds are plentiful, especially the water fowl and as
Dhudwa is close to Himalayan foothills, various species stop over in the course
of their migration to the plains in the winter. In a to save the Indian one- horned
rhinoceros , seven rhinos from Assam and Nepal were introduced at Dudhwa in 1984-85
and today they are the star attraction of the Park.
